What can you use the app for?

Squidoo is a web page builder that lets users create and manage pages on any topic or theme they want. Users can create unique pages that contain a wealth of information, images and other content focused around their topic. Topic options are extremely diverse. Users can choose from popular topics, such as food, video games, education, fashion, music, business, pets, parenting, internet, cars, relationships and many more. The pages can act as an information resource or provide instructions. Users can search by keyword or browse topics to find existing Squidoo pages. The pages are referred to as “lenses” because they bring the user’s point of view on the topic into focus. Users can create and manage multiple lenses on one Squidoo account.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Squidoo was founded in October of 2005 by Seth Godin. The application’s popularity really took off as it reached out to more internet users. By the time the application was six months old, the user community had created 100,000 lenses. Users loved the opportunity to create a page dedicated to a topic of interest, shown from their point of view. The application also supported Amazon, Ebay and CafePress modules that let users earn revenue as well as groups that helped users’ grow their lens viewing audience.

What are the differences to other apps?

Squidoo is essentially a website building tool. This is not a new concept, however many find Squidoo appealing because of the way it invites users to make pages. The user can choose a topic that interests them and create a centralized information hub that shows their perspective. Users can make Squidoo lenses that answer questions, provide insight or further a cause. Users can post instructions or share data to back up their opinions.

Alternative Apps
How does the web app look and feel to use?

Squidoo uses a simple interface that favors bright blue and light hues. The interface is clean and clutter free for the most part. Users will notice that advertisements are found throughout the site. This is to be expected considering the price of the service. The ads do not detract from the user’s overall experience. Building a new lens is very easy and does not require any prior design or coding experience. Squidoo provides the average internet user with an easy, entertaining way to share information online.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can join the Squidoo community by clicking the “Join Us” button in the upper, left hand corner of the page. The following page asks the user for an email address, username and password. After checking the terms of service agreement box, the user can enter a verification word and submit the form. The user is automatically logged in and can begin building their first Squidoo lens or search for existing lenses.

What does it cost to use the application?

Squidoo is available to all users for nothing. There are no subscription fees and anyone can sign up and start building lenses. The application does not require any purchases to maintain account access. The price is exactly where it should be. Without the users, Squidoo would have nothing to offer visitors. There would be no new lenses created and fewer topics covered. The free price tag makes the service appealing and encourages more individuals to join the Squidoo community.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Squidoo is a helpful tool for anyone who wants to build a website focused on a specific topic, activity or issue. The application is very easy to understand and the user can build pages on any topic imaginable. The lens concept encourages users to share their point of view. Users can add many different types of content to their lenses, creating a central location to share and access information on a topic.
